Human Jury Meets AI Evaluation: What Cannes Lions 2026 Reveals About Creative Effectiveness

by

By Ruchir Prasad

Every year, the Cannes Lions winners become the industry’s benchmark for creative excellence.

Winning campaigns become case studies, agencies dissect them, and brands look to them for inspiration. But once the trophies are handed out, what we still don’t know is: What actually makes these campaigns stand out in the first place?

Awards tell us which campaigns won. They rarely explain why they won or, more importantly, which characteristics marketing teams can consistently apply to create more effective creative.

Before Cannes Lions 2026, C5i Incivus analyzed 35 shortlisted campaigns across the Titanium, Innovation, and Glass: The Lion for Change categories. Instead of relying on industry opinion or creative intuition, the platform evaluated every campaign against measurable dimensions including Creative Effectiveness, Message Clarity, Emotional Resonance, Persuasiveness, Strategic Alignment, Purchase Intent, and Brand Impact to identify the signals most strongly associated with effective advertising.

The analysis identified five recurring characteristics across the strongest shortlisted work:

  • Clear messaging
  • Emotional resonance
  • Strategic intent
  • Persuasive execution
  • Meaningful brand impact

Once the Cannes winners were announced, those signals became something more than a hypothesis. They became a way to understand whether the characteristics identified by AI were also recognized by one of the world’s most respected creative juries.

For marketers, that’s where the real value lies. Not in predicting winners, but in understanding the characteristics that consistently underpin creative excellence.

Cannes Validated More Than Winning Campaigns. It Validated Creative Signals.

It goes without saying, but creative juries and AI evaluate campaigns differently. The Cannes jury looks for originality, cultural relevance, innovation, execution, and industry impact. C5i Incivus, our GenAI-powered AdTech product, evaluates how effectively creatives communicate, persuade, resonate emotionally, reinforce the brand, and align with audience objectives.

One evaluates creative significance, while the other evaluates creative effectiveness. It is important to note that these are not competing approaches. They are complementary.

When the Cannes winners were compared with the Incivus analysis, the goal wasn’t to measure whether AI “got it right.” It was to understand whether the same creative signals consistently appeared in the work recognized by both audiences and expert juries.

The results suggest they did.

Several campaigns identified among the highest-ranked Incivus contenders, including Oreo CowsExpedition ImpossibleRecipe for ChangeWelcome Back, Paisano, and Supernova Adaptivewent on to receive Cannes Lions recognition.

More importantly, regardless of category, the winners consistently demonstrated the same underlying creative characteristics that Incivus had identified before Cannes.

What Are the Signals That Defined Cannes-Winning Creatives?

While the winning campaigns differed in execution, objective, and category, the analysis revealed remarkably consistent creative patterns.

1. Breakthrough Ideas Were Easy to Understand

The strongest ideas remove friction between creativity and comprehension. By measuring Ad Copy Effectiveness, Message Clarity, Emotional Resonance, Relevance, and Persuasive Triggers, Incivus pinpoints campaigns that turn bold thinking into instantly understood storytelling.

Titanium celebrates ideas that redefine categories. Yet the winning work proved that breakthrough creativity doesn’t have to be difficult to understand.

Across the Titanium winners, Ad Copy Effectiveness ranged from 96.7 to 100, Message Clarity from 8.9 to 10, Emotional Resonance from 9.0 to 9.8, Relevance from 8.8 to 9.6, and Persuasive Triggers from 9.1 to 10

Campaigns such as Oreo Cows and Expedition Impossible illustrate this well. Although radically different in execution, both communicate ambitious ideas with remarkable clarity, allowing audiences and juries to immediately understand what makes the work distinctive.

The analysis shows that the strongest campaigns didn’t simplify the idea itself. They simplified the way audiences experienced it.

For marketers, the implication is clear. Innovation creates greater impact when people immediately understand why it matters.

2. Purpose Created Action, Not Just Awareness

Purpose becomes powerful only when it inspires action. Incivus identifies purpose-driven campaigns that move beyond awareness by measuring Relevance, Persuasive Triggers, Message Clarity, Ad Copy Effectiveness, and Emotional Resonance – revealing creative that converts belief into behavior.

Purpose-driven campaigns often risk creating awareness without changing behavior.

The Glass winners demonstrated the opposite.

Across the category, Ad Copy Effectiveness consistently ranged between 96.3 and 100, Emotional Resonance scored 9–10, Message Clarity reached 9–10, Relevance remained exceptionally high, and Persuasive Triggers scored 9.8–10

These campaigns used powerful storytelling to communicate complex societal issues, making the inequity, the brand’s role, and the intended change immediately understandable. Rather than relying on purpose-led messaging alone, they were rooted in genuine cultural insight and built a compelling case for why action mattered.

Campaigns such as Recipe for Change and Welcome Back, Paisano illustrate this well.

Recipe for Change transforms recipes into a fundraising mechanism to help address food insecurity, turning an everyday activity into an opportunity for social impact. Welcome Back, Paisano celebrates the shared heritage between Mexican and Italian communities, making the brand central to a story of identity and belonging.

Although the campaigns address different issues, both demonstrate the same principle: Purpose becomes more effective when audiences clearly understand both the problem and the brand’s role in solving it.

3. Innovation Was Sophisticated but Never Complicated

The best innovations simplified complexity without diminishing their impact. Incivus measures Cognitive Load, Message Clarity, Funnel Compatibility, Persuasive Triggers, and Ad Copy Effectiveness to identify ideas that make innovation feel intuitive, compelling, and easy to embrace.

Innovation campaigns often introduce unfamiliar technologies or category-defining ideas. Yet, the strongest winners demonstrated that technical sophistication doesn’t require creative complexity.

Across the category, winners consistently maintained moderate Cognitive Load while achieving high scores in Message Clarity, Ad Copy Effectiveness, Persuasive Triggers, and Funnel Compatibility. Winning campaigns used compelling storytelling to explain complex innovations clearly, helping juries understand what made the idea groundbreaking and impactful. At the same time, the purpose behind the innovation was immediately apparent, reinforcing the problem being solved and the value being created.

Supernova Adaptive exemplifies this balance. Rather than showcasing technology for its own sake, the campaign communicates its innovation through a simple, human-centered narrative that makes the solution immediately understandable and relevant.

The takeaway? The most innovative ideas are rarely hard to understand. They’re the easiest.

Across Titanium, Glass, and Innovation, one theme consistently emerged.

The campaigns that earned Cannes recognition approached creativity in very different ways, yet they shared many of the same underlying characteristics. Whether the objective was to showcase breakthrough innovation, inspire social change, or strengthen brand connection, the work consistently demonstrated clarity, emotional relevance, strategic intent, persuasive storytelling, and meaningful brand integration.

That raises a more important question than who won.

What do these recurring signals mean for marketing teams trying to create more effective work every day?

What This Means for Marketing Leaders

Creative effectiveness is no longer a trade-off between brand consistency and audience impact. By measuring Emotional Resonance, Persuasive Triggers, and Brand Compliance, Incivus enables marketing leaders to identify creative that reinforces the brand while driving meaningful consumer engagement.

The value of this analysis extends well beyond Cannes. Marketing teams make hundreds of creative decisions: evaluating concepts, refining messaging, balancing brand visibility with storytelling, and deciding which ideas are ready for market. However, many of those decisions are still shaped primarily by experience, intuition, and subjective feedback.

The Cannes winners suggest that there is another way to approach creative evaluation.

Across categories, the winning work consistently demonstrated clear communication, emotional relevance, persuasive storytelling, strategic intent, and meaningful brand integration. These are not simply characteristics of award-winning campaigns. They are characteristics of creative that connects with audiences and supports business outcomes.

For marketing leaders, that changes the conversation. Instead of asking: “Do we like this creative?”, teams should focus on asking: “What signals suggest this creative will resonate?”.

That shift moves creative evaluation beyond personal preference and towards a more structured understanding of what makes creative effective.

Creative Excellence Leaves Measurable Signals

The world’s best creative doesn’t just inspire – it performs in measurable ways. Incivus quantifies Message Clarity, Emotional Resonance, and Persuasiveness to reveal why the most effective campaigns create lasting business and consumer impact.

One of the most significant outcomes of this analysis is that AI and the Cannes jury recognized not just the same campaigns, but also many of the same creative characteristics.

Across the three categories we analyzed, the winners consistently demonstrated exceptional message clarity, emotional resonance, persuasive storytelling, strategic alignment, and strong brand integration. Those weren’t isolated observations confined to a single category. They appeared repeatedly across very different campaigns, audiences, and creative approaches.

That consistency matters. It suggests that while creativity itself will always involve originality and human imagination, the characteristics behind creative effectiveness are often more repeatable than many organizations assume.

For marketers, this creates an opportunity to evaluate creative much earlier in the development process. Not to predict which campaigns will win awards. Rather, to identify opportunities to strengthen clarity, improve persuasion, increase emotional relevance, and reinforce strategic alignment before campaigns reach the market.

Instead of replacing creative judgment, these signals provide teams with a stronger foundation for making creative decisions with greater confidence.

Human Expertise and AI Strengthen Different Parts of the Creative Process

Creative excellence begins with human imagination but is strengthened by understanding how well it is executed and how it resonates with the intended audience. Incivus measures production quality through Creative Effectiveness and predicts audience response through Purchase Intent across target personas, enabling more informed creative decisions.

The Cannes analysis also reinforces why creative evaluation should never rely on a single perspective.

Creative juries recognise originality, cultural significance, creative bravery, and ideas capable of influencing industries.

AI contributes something different. It evaluates recurring creative signals consistently across large volumes of work, helping teams understand which characteristics repeatedly appear in effective creative and where opportunities for improvement exist.

The two approaches answer different, but equally important questions.

Human expertise asks: “Is this a remarkable creative idea?”

AI helps answer: “What characteristics make this creative more likely to resonate?”

Together, they create a more complete framework for evaluating creatives than either could achieve independently. Instead of replacing creative judgment, it’s about giving creative judgment better information.

Conclusion

Every year, Cannes Lions celebrates the campaigns that redefine creative excellence. For marketers, the greater opportunity lies in understanding the characteristics that consistently make those campaigns effective.

This year’s analysis suggests that many of those characteristics are measurable. Clear messaging, emotional resonance, strategic intent, persuasive storytelling, and meaningful brand integration. These signals appeared consistently across the work recognized by the Cannes jury, and together they provide marketing teams with a practical framework for evaluating creative before campaigns reach the market.

Awards celebrate creative excellence. Creative intelligence helps explain it.

By combining human expertise with AI, marketing teams can build a more repeatable framework for creating campaigns that resonate with audiences, strengthen brands, and drive business impact.

The future of creative evaluation isn’t humans versus AI. It lies in leveraging the ideal combination of human expertise and AI to help marketing teams make better creative decisions, faster and at greater scale.
